Crocheted Jute Basket

I have to admit, I am a sucker for baskets. I absolutely love them. I mean they work for storage, and look fabulous at the same time!

I also have a current obsession with jute rope. I have always had a tendency to be drawn toward more natural elements, and I adore using them in decor and design.

Which brings me to my newest creation: this adorable crocheted jute basket. I am just in love with it! I decided to add some white cotton yarn at the top, and I think it really makes the basket pop!

I can’t keep this precious basket all to myself, so I have listed the instructions below. If you have any questions, please leave me a comment. Enjoy! XO

Materials:

4 Rolls of Heavy Duty Jute; this is the kind I purchased

Lily Sugar & Cream Yarn in White

Crochet Hook size J or 6.00 mm

To make the basket we are going to use the double strand method. Place 2 strands of jute together, and make the slip knot.

Chain 4, and slip stitch into first chain. Chain 1, and do 10 HDC into middle of chain. Slip stitch into first HDC. It should look something like this.

Chain 1. Do 2 HDC into next stitch and 1 HDC into stitch after that. Repeat 9 times. Slip stitch into first HDC. (You should have 30 total HDC)

Chain 1. Do 2 HDC, and 1 HDC into each of next 6 stitches. Repeat 9 times. Slip stitch into first HDC. (You should have 80 total HDC)

Chain 1. Now you will HDC into the back loops only of each stitch around. (80 total HDC)

You will no longer need to chain 1, so you will need to place a stitch marker to keep track of your stitches. (Unless, you live in a magical land where you can actually keep track of counting stitches without constantly being interrupted by little ones. If so, may I please come visit you?)

HDC your 80 stitches around the circle for 3 rows. Be sure to move your stitch marker up with each new row.

HDC in the next 32 stitches. Chain 8. Skip 8 stitches. HDC in 32 stitches. Chain 8. Skip 8 stitches.

HDC in the next 80 stitches, including the chains. Slip stitch into first HDC. Cut jute, and pull through to tie off. Your basket should now look something like this.

Now this basket is super cute as is. So, if you are happy, by all means leave it just like this. But, I just can’t leave well enough alone, so I had to add a little something extra.

I switched to an H or 5.00 mm hook, and simply added a row of the white yarn in HDC all the way around the top of the basket.

There you have it! I truly hope you all enjoy this basket as much as I do! XO
