5 Ways To Keep Your Marriage Strong Through The Toddler Years

When you have children of any age, but in particular through the toddler years, how do you keep your marriage strong?

You know the scene. You are knee deep in poopy diapers, a mile long pile of laundry, the never ending list of errands, sippy cups leaking juice all over the floor, trying to maintain some semblance of order in your home…need I go on?

And, all of this is happening while said toddler is losing their mind in one of many full blown tantrums for the day.

Of course, all of this happens right when your husband walks in the door. You are so incredibly tired, and frustrated, and probably a little sweaty too. 😉

Your first inclination is to run away hand the kids to your husband, and say ‘you deal with it’.

In these hot mess express times how on Earth do you keep your marriage strong? I mean you are exhausted and overwhelmed, and I am fairly sure you are not feeling that this is your most attractive moment.

Embrace Your Partner

I know, I know…things are usually super crazy when he gets home, and you are probably in the middle of making dinner, BUT do it anyway.

Guess what? He may have had a rough day too.

No matter what is going on in our home, when my husband gets home we embrace. It just feels good to fall into his arms…even if one of the kiddos is screaming the entire time! 😉

Make The Time

Date nights can be incredibly difficult to manage. Especially if you move to a new town, and know zero babysitters! (I know all about this one.)

Even if you need to schedule an at home date night after the kiddos are asleep, DO IT!

It is incredibly important to put each other first, and solely focus on each other. Whether it be a nice meal alone, dancing all night, or watching a movie, you will be so glad you did it!

Talk To Each Other

This seems like an easy one, but there are some really long days with kids, a marriage can feel more like an assembly line than an actual relationship.

We can also find ourselves only talking about the kids. #Guilty

Find different things to talk about. Imagine you are back on one of your early dates, and were getting to know each other.

I know it sounds kind of silly, but it’s really important to continue to connect. If you are having trouble coming up with things to talk about, you can find some really fun conversation starter cards here.

Have Fun

It is so important to have fun! Many studies have shown that we actually think better, and are more creative when we are having fun.

Be silly! Have a tickle fest, pillow fight, play putt putt, go bowling, play a game. Whatever you decide just have fun!

Leave your worries behind, remember to breathe, and celebrate life together!

Don’t Stop Dreaming

This is a big one for me.

With the endless to do lists, over worked jobs, screaming kiddos, sometimes it feels like we are just in survival mode. But, don’t ever stop dreaming.

Where do you want to be in 5 years? What would your dream life look like? If money were no object what would you love to do?

Do you dream of traveling to an exotic place? Maybe you want to start your own business.

These are all super fun things to discuss with your partner, and you may learn something new along the way.

Dream together! You never know…one day those dreams may come true.

4 Things All Moms Should Be Wearing

We have all seen it…the LISTS. You know the ones? The lists that tell women, in particular moms, what they should no longer be wearing.

There was a recent list I read, ‘what women over 30 should never wear’, and honestly it just made me sad.

This list included items such as graphic tees (ain’t nobody taking my #MomLife tee from me!), and hoop earrings. What the what? Hoop earrings??? Seriously, a staple of my wardrobe.

So with all the lists telling us what not to wear, I thought it would be a nice idea to list some things I think all moms SHOULD be wearing, on the DAILY! 🙂

Confidence

Mama you know how to wear a baby on your hip, hold a toddler’s hand, carry book bags and a purse, and clench that cup of coffee, all while walking to your car. #Fierce

You are responsible for raising these tiny humans into amazing people. EV.ER.Y.DAY

Yes, you may have stretch marks, have an added pooch that wasn’t there before, and bags for days under your eyes.  But let me tell you something, you have EARNED them. All of it is because you rock at being a mommy!

Work those aisles in Target like a runway, sashay that school pick up line #likeaboss, and know that you are amazingly beautiful just the way you are!

Grace

I feel very passionate about this fashion must!

We need to have grace for ourselves, others, and especially mommies.

If you’re having one of ‘those’ days, the ones where you question if you are doing anything right, and the kids are literally climbing the walls…wear grace.

When you see another woman who is on the verge of tears because the weight of the world is closing in…wear grace.

When you are at the store and you see a mommy whose children are running and screaming, and you can see that her head is about to explode (P.S. it’s probably me 😉 )…wear grace.

We are all in this together, and we need to show grace to one another. Never ever assume you know someone else’s journey.

No mom has it ALL together. No mom has an Instagram or Pinterest perfect life. We all need a little help, and a whole lot of grace.

Flats

This is the only actual fashion item on the list.

Seriously though, if you are a mom get you some flats! I am certainly not saying to never wear heels, it’s just that #MomLife will be a lot easier to manage in a good pair of flats.

It is incredibly difficult to chase a small child, balance groceries, and dodge sippy cups being hurled at you in every direction in heels.

Think like a ninja. Trust me, ninjas don’t wear heals! 😉

Whatever You Want

I think this goes without saying, but wear absolutely whatever you want!

You want to wear red lipstick? Go for it! Graphic tees with leggings are your jam? Rock on mama! You are more of a tee with a blazer kind of gal? Get it girl!

Here’s the thing…you are a grown woman who is fully capable of deciding what makes you comfortable.

Please don’t ever let one of those ‘lists’ make you feel less than you are. And definitely don’t let them make you throw out your most favorite, worn in, thread bare sweatpants or t-shirts EVER!

XO

Why Won’t My Baby Sleep?

We have all been there. Your new, sweet, amazingly wonderful baby wakes up several times during the night. As a mommy, especially a new mommy, you are completely exhausted and let’s face it…frustrated.

You love this child fiercely, but my goodness how nice it would be if they would just SLEEP! And we all know mama needs her some sleep too!

Y’all I’m so excited to introduce you to Pachi Parra. She is a Pediatric Sleep Consultant, and I am happy to have her do a guest post for us today.

Pachi is also super duper sweet, and has served as a nanny for many years. She has the expertise and patience to answer any questions you may have. Pachi is also offering a free 15 minute consultation with us mommies!

Gift of sleep

Why won’t my baby sleep?

I bet you often ask this question. Maybe even in a sweet voice, or  in a pleading voice, maybe in an angry voice, but no matter how many times you asked, if you are reading this you probably never got the answer.

You may feel like you can not take it anymore. Your baby just would not stay asleep and you hit rock bottom, exhausted from waking up multiple times every night and having to soothe him back to sleep.

When our babies don’t sleep well, we tend to look for an explanation. We think it might be teething or gas. We worry that she’s too small and she needs to eat in the night, or he’s too big and he needs to eat more or he won’t feel full. The list goes on and on.

Are any of these explanations the real truth? Sometimes. But barring those times when your child has a burning fever or a new tooth coming in, the real reason most babies won’t sleep or stay asleep is that they just haven’t learned how.

We all have strategies that help us make the journey into sleep each night. We have bedtime routines that we tend to do without really thinking about it, and we do these things because they help us transition from the busyness of our day to a restful sleep.

Most of us have a favorite position on the bed that we turn to when we feel sleep about to come. Some of us need a glass of water beside the bed, some need white noise or music, others can’t sleep without the window open. Some need a cup of herbal tea, and some have to read for ten minutes…Whatever the differences might be, these are all sleep strategies, and without them we’d have trouble drifting off.

The same goes for babies. Many parents who haven’t developed a sleeping strategy for their babies will complain that their child can only fall asleep with the bottle, or while breastfeeding, or while being rocked or patted.

While this might be true, the trouble is, by offering these props, parents are creating a situation where their babies are dependent on something external to help them sleep. And that’s why they don’t sleep well.

Night waking is very common in babies who have not learned to sleep properly and are relying on a prop. When they wake up and the prop isn’t there to put them back to sleep, they have to wake up fully and cry in order to be soothed back to sleep. It’s not personal, Mom and Dad… they haven’t made it their personal mission to wake you up ten times a night. They just have no idea how to go to sleep without your help.

Luckily there is hope. There are lots of ways to give your child the tools she needs to be able to sleep independently, even from a very young age. Babies are capable of sleeping through the night, and learning those skills young will help make bedtimes and nighttime relatively hassle-free.

A well-rested child is a happier, healthier child. And a well-rested parent is healthier and happier too!

Rock Your Mommy Bathing Suit

This post contains affiliate links, meaning if you make a purchase through a link I will receive a small commission. Thank you for supporting this blog! XO

You may have seen the hilarious video of the lovely ladies at imomsohard showing the horrific bathing suit options for moms. If you haven’t, do yourself a favor and go watch it now…don’t worry I’ll wait.

Okay, this video seriously had me laughing so hard I was crying!

I agree with ev.er.y.th.ing in this video!

Let me say, if you can sport that string bikini, or side cut outs…please do! But, this mama CANNOT!

I am a big believer in loving the body you are in, and setting a good example for my children.

Me not loving my thighs IS NOT going to keep me from splashing in the water with my kiddos! Trust me, they aren’t going to remember my not so perfect body, but will remember the fun we had as a family. 🙂

With that being said, I still want some cute, fun, and practical bathing suit options. I mean I may have two rambunctious children, who have added very heavy bags under my eyes, and I am a total hot mess express 99% of the time, BUT I can still work it with the best of them!

I thought I would share with you some of my top picks to rock that bathing suit this summer!

I absolutely love this Bathing Beauty One Piece, do you?

Rock Your Mommy Bathing Suit

This emerald green is beyond gorgeous, and I love the coverage. It also has kind of a vintage vibe, which I think is very retro chic. This suit comes in a variety of sizes, so ladies of all shapes and sizes can rock this look!

Check out this adorable floral one piece.

Rock Your Mommy Bathing Suit

I am loving this floral print, I think it is sweetly feminine. This suit also has good coverage, and comes in multiple sizes.

I am loving this vibrant tankini.

I think it is bright, lovely, and just screams summer! I would definitely wear this suit!

If you are into sporting a two piece, I think this suit is amazing!

Rock Your Mommy Bathing Suit

This has a really neat design, and support for the girls…which let’s face it some of us really need! 😉

For the love of gingham, I just can’t even! This has got to be one of my absolute favs!

Rock Your Mommy Bathing Suit

Great coverage, and has that vintage feel! I am crushing on this so hard!

Again ladies, be fearless and love the body you have! Don’t waste any precious memories with those kiddos!

The Busy Mom’s Guide to Excercise

Hello my darlings!

Winter Break is officially over…I hope everyone survived! We had quite a whirlwind around here. Our family and friends came to visit through out the entire break, and I have to say it was absolutely amazing!

When we moved I didn’t realize how incredibly difficult it would be to relocate to a place where we had no family or friends. An extended visit with those we love is always treasured!

With all of that being said this mommy was ready for the kiddos to get back to school…I mean like NOW!!!

Taking a Simpler Approach to Christmas

Hello my darlings!

I have been thinking a lot about ways for our family to simplify Christmas.  It seems like every year I see so many people trying to ‘one up’ their previous Christmas. And believe me, I get it.

It is difficult to not get sucked into the abyss of buying a bunch of gifts. We see what our friends and family members are doing and buying, and then there is the constant barrage of commercials. We inevitably say to ourselves “They are great kids, they deserve everything their hearts desire.” And Sally is buying all kinds of things for her kids, and you would never want your children to feel left out. I mean that is just good parenting…right?!?

Traveling with Kids…and Not Losing Your Mind

Hello my darlings! It’s that time of year again, and for many this means lots of traveling.

If your kiddos are anything like mine…car travel is not the most exciting time. The youngest absolutely HATES to ride in the car. I mean, since Day 1. She screams her little head off, kicks, HATES it!!! It can be extremely trying.

Now, you may not have such an extreme situation, but kids can still become very restless while traveling. With this in mind, I thought I would share a few tips and tricks that I use, which definitely help with travel.

Fine Motor Skills Fun

Hello my darlings! I hope you had a wonderful weekend! I know we did.

We had some family come for a visit, and got to celebrate a very untraditional Thanksgiving. I adore almost anything ‘outside of the box’. And, after moving to a brand new city of strangers, a family visit is always happily welcomed. 🙂

Over the course of the weekend, I noticed that our son’s fine motor skills have drastically improved.

We have been struggling with some fine motor skills issues for awhile. After discussing this with my son’s wonderful and amazing teacher, she shared some amazing exercises with me. I am super excited to spread the love, and to share these tips and tricks with you today!
