Otherwise, we both know what will happen. Those items will sit in their box or bag, and then you will be right back to the clutter problem all over again. And, you definitely do NOT want that!

How Do I Declutter My Clothes?

Now that you are armed with some easy tips for decluttering your clothes. You may be asking yourself, but how do I actually do it? Don’t worry, together we will walk through exactly how to get your closets and drawers decluttered once and for all.

Step 1 – Take everything out

Remove everything from the closet and drawers. Yes everything. We are talking clothes, shoes, handbags, accessories, and anything else that may be lurking in there.

Take a minute to assess your space. How does it look? Is there more space then you thought? It feels good having all that clutter gone doesn’t it? Remember this moment for when you are deciding what you will keep..

While you are removing all of the items from your closet or drawers. A great tip is to go ahead and sort like items with other like items. For instance, grab all of your jeans and place them in a pile. This will be helpful for the next step. 😉

Step 2 – Purge baby purge

Purging is hands down the hardest step when decluttering clothes. But, I am here to tell you that you can do this. I am right behind you. Cheering you on every step of the way.

The first thing you need to do when it comes to purging your clothes is to breathe! Easy right? No, but seriously. Remember to breathe, and take a moment to reflect on why you are doing this.

Decluttering and purging your clothes is going to make your life SO much easier. And, it is important to note that this is not a punishment. This is about being able to only have items that you truly love, and make you feel good.

It is about quality over quantity. And removing the overwhelm and dread that accompany you each day when you look into that closet.

Imagine being able to pick out an outfit in seconds. Imagine looking at your closet, and everything is exactly where it should be. How does that feel? So good right? Okay, let’s do this!

  • Discard any torn, faded, or stained clothing.
  • Place any items you know that you want to donate or sell into their appropriate boxes, totes, or bags.
  • Be ruthless when deciding what to keep.

This is the time to be incredibly ruthless with your clothing. Get really clear on keeping only the items that you truly love. Anything else is only weighing you down, and bringing unnecessary stress into your life!

And remember that basics are timeless classics that always look great. I’m looking at you simple navy top and classic black dress. 😉

Here are a few questions to ask yourself when considering what clothing to keep.

Have you worn it in the past 6 months?

Do you have multiples or similar items?

When is the last time you wore it?

Does it fit?

Do you like the way you feel in the item?

Does the item bring you joy?

Would I buy this same item today?

Do you have something to wear with it?

If you no longer wear the item, or it doesn’t actually bring you joy, then I highly encourage you to consider donating or selling the item. There is no need to hold on to things that simply weigh you down, and make you feel overwhelmed or bad about yourself. And, just think about the fact that there is someone out there that this item will help!

Side note:

Stay present. Get clear on who you are right now, and what your lifestyle is in this moment. What you used to wear may not be what works for you today. And, that is totally okay! Embrace it, and love yourself mama!

  • If you are honestly stuck on what to keep, then create a maybe pile.

This is one that I advise for you to proceed with caution. Remember, you are decluttering clothes. Which means eliminate them!

However, I completely understand that when going through the piles of clothes you will encounter some pieces that make you pause and think maybe you should keep it. So, try on anything you think you may want to keep. And take the time to ask yourself the above listed questions.

Step 4 – Put everything back

Once you have finished decluttering your clothes, you will need to put everything back. Simply hang the items back in the closet, or fold and put back in drawers. Here are some of my absolute favorite hangers for our closet.

I mean, you took the time to declutter. Why not have pretty hangers too? If you were using wire hangers, then you can donate them to your local dry cleaners.

Now step back and assess what is in your closet. Does anything stick out, and just not flow with the rest of your wardrobe? Chances are there is. Hold that item up to you, and really think about if your want to keep it. PS You probably don’t. 😉

And, don’t forget to find a spot for your shoes and accessories too!

Go ahead and put any bags or boxes of donations that are to be made in your car, and not your trunk. If those items are staring at you, and make getting in and out of your car a bit difficult. Guess what happens? You will follow through with donating them.

Also, remember to set a date with a reminder on your phone and calendar. And, follow through. Ask for accountability to help you with this. There is never any shame in asking for help!

How To Keep Your Clothes Decluttered

Now that you have accomplished decluttering your clothes. You would really like to keep it that way. Right?

My best advice here is to simply stay on top of it. Do a sweep once every 3-6 months and remove anything that doesn’t belong. Remember underwear, bras, and socks too. They do get worn out!

Also, buy only what you truly need! If you manage how much stuff you have, then decluttering is a breeze! Another tip is if you do buy a new article of clothing, then discard one item of old clothing. This keeps everything nice and neat, and not piling up and back into old habits.
